Information on Sleep Disorders
(Adapted from the International Classification of Sleep Disorders, American Academy of Sleep Medicine 2006.)
SNORING
Snoring is a noise which originates in the upper airway (nose or back of the throat) during sleep. It is caused by excessive vibration of tissue. Snoring may be a symptom of obstructive sleep apnea or upper airway resistance syndrome, or it may be classified as primary snoring. Individuals with snoring may be unaware of the problem until someone hears the noise and mentions it. Individuals who have chronic snoring may experience a dry mouth, irritated throat, non-refreshing sleep, morning headaches or nighttime wake ups. Although snoring is most common in adult men, it is not unusual for women and children, even babies, to snore. Snoring is not normal and can lead to high blood pressure.
